Staircase parts buying guide

  1. 1

    Match the groove

Spindles sit in grooves in the handrail and baserail. Check the groove size in the rail title (e.g. 13mm for metal spindles, 41mm for 41mm square spindles) before you order.

  2. 2

    Measure your newel posts

Newel cladding kits and caps are sized to the post – measure the existing post’s width and depth and pick the kit that matches.

  3. 3

    Check the regulations

In England, Approved Document K sets stair handrail height at 900–1000mm above the pitch line, and gaps in the balustrade should not let a 100mm sphere pass through.

Questions

Can I clad my existing staircase instead of replacing it?

Yes. Tread and riser cladding fits over existing treads and risers, provided the staircase underneath is sound and secure. Add newel post and stringer cladding to finish the whole staircase in oak.

Do you make treads to measure?

Yes – the bespoke rustic oak bullnose treads are made to measure up to 1250 x 600mm. Other treads come in the set lengths listed on each product.

Which spindles fit my handrail?

Match the spindle to the groove in the handrail and baserail. Each rail title gives its groove (for example 12.5mm or 13mm for metal spindles, 41mm for 41mm square oak spindles).

Can I add LED lights to my stairs?

Yes. The Stair LED Lighting range covers strip lights, power supplies and controllers, and some newel posts are made with a channel for LED cable – look for “LED” in the product title.
